-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- =========================================================================== AUSCERT External Security Bulletin Redistribution ESB-2001.513 -- SGI Security Advisory CDE vulnerabilities 3 December 2001 =========================================================================== AusCERT Security Bulletin Summary --------------------------------- Product: CDE 5.0 CDE 5.1 Vendor: SGI Operating System: IRIX 6.5 to 6.5.14 Impact: Root Compromise Access Required: Remote Ref: ESB-2001.480 - --------------------------BEGIN INCLUDED TEXT-------------------- - -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: CDE vulnerabilities Number: 20011107-01-P Reference: CERT CA-2001-31 Date: November 30, 2001 ______________________________________________________________________________ - - ----------------------- - - --- Issue Specifics --- - - ----------------------- Security Focus has reported that several suid root CDE utilities have buffer overruns which can lead to security compromises. These utilities are "dtaction", "dtprintinfo", "dtterm", "dtsession", and "dtspcd". There is a related issue with the CDE ToolTalk "ttsession" messaging server's usage of a weak RPC authentication mechanism. Because of this, the ttsession process can be manipulated to execute unauthorized arbitrary programs with the privileges of the running ttsession. SGI has investigated the issues and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. These issues have been corrected in future releases of CDE. - - -------------- - - --- Impact --- - - -------------- CDE is an optional product and is not installed by default. The dtspcd and ttsession vulnerabilities can be exploited by a remote user. The other vulnerabilities would require a local user account on the host system in order to exploit them. The exploitation of these vulnerabilities can lead to a root compromise. These vulnerabilities have been reported by Security Focus, CERT, BugTraq, Last Stage of Delirium Research Group, and ISS, and have been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and security mailing lists. CERT® Advisory CA-2001-31 Buffer Overflow in CDE Subprocess Control Service: http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2001-31.html - - ---------------------------- - - --- Temporary Workaround --- - - ---------------------------- SGI acknowledges that it may not always be possible to immediately install patches or upgrade the operating system. In those cases, we recommend removing the suid bit from the relevant binaries until the patch can be applied. This will result in reduced functionality of the system, and will not completely secure the system from these vulnerabilities. If you want to do this, please follow this procedure: % su - root # cd /usr/dt/bin # chmod 755 dtaction # chmod 755 dtprintinfo # chmod 755 dtsession # chmod 755 dtterm # chmod 755 rpc.ttdbserverd # exit It is not necessary to reboot the system after doing this. You should install the patch or upgrade to a later version of CDE as soon as it is possible to do so. - - ---------------- - - --- Solution --- - - ---------------- SGI has provided a patch for CDE 5.1 which can be applied to an IRIX 6.5.x system with CDE installed. The problem will be fixed in a future release of CDE. CDE Version Vulnerable?
