1. Bulletins Topics

Sun announces the release of patches for Solaris(tm) 8, 7, and
    2.6 (SunOS(tm) 5.8, 5.7, and 5.6) which relate to a buffer
    overflow in snmpdx(1M).

Sun recommends that you install the patches listed in section 4
immediately on systems running the Sun Solstice Enterprise
    Master Agent, snmpdx(1M), on SunOS 5.8, 5.7, and 5.6.

2. Who is Affected

    Vulnerable: SunOS 5.8, 5.8_x86, 5.7, 5.7_x86, 5.6,
                                   5.6_x86

3. Understanding the Vulnerability

The Sun Solstice Enterprise Master Agent, snmpdx, runs as a daemon
process and listens to User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port 161 for
SNMP request. The snmpdx daemon also opens another port to receive
SNMP trap notifications from various subagents. These traps are
forwarded to various managers, as determined by the configuration
    file.

The snmpdx master agent runs as a daemon with root privileges on
the system. The snmpdx daemon is started by default via the
/etc/rc3.d/S76snmpdx script. A buffer overflow has been discovered
in snmpdx which may be exploited by a local or a remote attacker to
gain root access on the affected system. Any system that does not
run the Sun Solstice Enterprise Master Agent, sndmpx, is not
vulnerable to this issue. This issue was discovered by the Oulu
University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) who developed a PROTOS
test suite for SNMPv1. Information regarding the PROTOS project is
    available here:

    http://www.ee.oulu.fi/research/ouspg/protos/

CERT Advisory CA-2002-03 is available from:

    http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2002-03.html

4. List of Patches

The following patches are in the process of being propagated to the
worldwide SunSolve sites and should be available in the very near
    future:

    OS Version Patch ID
    __________ _________
    SunOS 5.8 108869-15
    SunOS 5.8_x86 108870-15
    SunOS 5.7 107709-18
    SunOS 5.7_x86 107710-18
    SunOS 5.6 106787-17
    SunOS 5.6_x86 106872-17
_______________________________________________________________________________
Sun acknowledges with thanks, the Oulu University Secure Group (OUSPG),
(http://www.ee.oulu.fi/research/ouspg/) for bringing this issue to our
attention.
