- - --- Update ---
- - --------------

SGI's Network Queuing Environment (NQE) product was Retired on
November, 2001 and will be Expired on November, 2002.

Please refer to the customer letter sent November 2001 for more
information: http://support.sgi.com/news/support/007-4500-001.html

Several vulnerabilities were discovered in NQE, refer to
SGI Security Advisory 20020101-01-I:
ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/20020101-01-I

Both SGI IRIX and Cray Unicos NQE products share a similar code base.

As a courtesy to our customers, SGI has coordinated with Cray, Inc.
to release a fix for 3.3.0.15 and 3.3.0.16 releases of NQE.

However, due to the retirement of the SGI NQE product this fix is
unsupported by SGI, but is available for free at the normal security
patch distribution site:
ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/unsupported/NQE-unsupported.tar.gz

Please follow the instructions in the README of the tar file.
No installation support will be provided for this fix, therefore
this fix is not available as an IRIX inst image.

- - -----------------------
- - --- Issue Specifics ---
- - -----------------------

It has been reported on Security Focus's BugTraq mailing list that CRAY's
NQS Network Queuing System contains multiple format string vulnerabilities.
In the past, SGI has sold a version of NQS called "NQE - Network Queuing
Environment", and through investigations has determined that NQE has
vulnerabilities.

See http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/242663 for details on the
CRAY / UNICOS version of this issue.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures
be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

- - --------------
- - --- Impact ---
- - --------------

The most current version of the NQE package that was sold by SGI is
3.3.0.16. This version is subject to the vulnerabilities described above.

As of November 2001, NQE has been classified as a "Retired" product and
is not currently available from SGI. NQE is still supported by SGI, but
it is no longer under development by SGI Engineering, and there will be
no further patches or fixes for it.

Further information about SGI support policies can be found at the following
URL: http://support.sgi.com/news/swmodes.html

These vulnerabilities can lead to a root compromise of the system running
NQE package.

A local user account on the vulnerable system is not required in order
to exploit these vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities can be exploited
remotely.

These vulnerabilities were reported on Security Focus / BugTraq :
http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/242663

These vulnerabilities have been publicly discussed in Usenet
newsgroups and security mailing lists.

- - ----------------
- - --- Solution ---
- - ----------------

These products have been retired, and SGI will not be providing
a patch for these vulnerabilities. SGI's recommendation is to
uninstall the product.

To determine if the product is installed, run the following command:

   # versions -b | grep NQE

If the output returned by the command looks similar to this:

   I NQE33015_Client_only 10/28/1999 N Q E 3.3.0.15 Client only
   I NQE33015_Components_and_Client 10/28/1999 N Q E 3.3.0.15 Components

...then NQE is installed and the system is vulnerable.

To uninstall the product, run the following command:

   # versions remove NQE*
