                          SGI Security Advisory

        Title: IRIX cron daemon vulnerability
        Number: 20020403-01-I
        Date: April 16, 2002
        Reference: CVE-2000-0579
______________________________________________________________________________

- - -----------------------
- - --- Issue Specifics ---
- - -----------------------

It's been reported that the IRIX cron daemon uses predictably named
temporary files, and that under certain circumstances this can lead to a
root exploit.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

This issue has been corrected in IRIX 6.5.10 and later versions.

- - --------------
- - --- Impact ---
- - --------------

The cron binary is installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems as part of
eoe.sw.base.

These vulnerabilities may be not exploited by a remote user, a local
account is required.

This vulnerability can lead to root exploit.

This vulnerability was assigned the following CVE:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2000-0579
http://online.securityfocus.com/bid/1413

- - ----------------
- - --- Solution ---
- - ----------------

SGI has not released any patches to address this problem.
Our recommendation is to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.10 or later.
