Reference: CERT CA-1999-11
Reference: CAN-2002-0677
Reference: CAN-2002-0678
Reference: SGI Security Advisory 20021102-01-P
Reference: SGI BUGS 872674 833473 860031 861480 872674
Fixed in : IRIX 6.5.18 or patch 4869

______________________________________________________________________________

- - -----------------------
- - --- Issue Specifics ---
- - -----------------------

This bulletin is an update to SGI Security Bulletin 20021102-01-P, see
ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/20021102-01-P.

The patch referenced in 20021102-01-P did not apply cleanly in some
instances. A new patch has been created that will apply cleanly on
current IRIX systems.

In addition to the items outlined in the above bulletin, this bulletin and
the fixes noted herein fix vulnerability #2 in CERT CA-1999-11. See
http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-1999-11.html for additional details.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected with a patch and in IRIX 6.5.18.

- - --------------
- - --- Impact ---
- - --------------

The rpc.ttdbserverd binary is not installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems.
It is part of the optional IRIX ToolTalk package (tooltalk_eoe.sw.runtime).

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

  # uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

  # 6.5 6.5.16f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if rpc.ttdbserverd is installed, execute the following command:

  # versions long | grep rpc.ttdbserverd
  f 1868 699 tooltalk_eoe.sw.runtime usr/ToolTalk/etc/rpc.ttdbserverd
  l 0 0 tooltalk_eoe.man.manpages usr/ToolTalk/man1m/rpc.ttdbserverd.z
  l 0 0 tooltalk_eoe.sw.links usr/etc/rpc.ttdbserverd

If the output of the command is similar to the above, then rpc.ttdbserverd
is installed and the system may be vulnerable.

- - ----------------------------
- - --- Temporary Workaround ---
- - ----------------------------

There is no effective workaround available for these problems if you need to
use tooltalk. SGI recommends either upgrading to IRIX 6.5.18 or later, or
installing the appropriate patch from the listing below.

- - ----------------
- - --- Solution ---
- - ----------------

SGI has provided a patch for these vulnerabilities. Our recommendation is to
upgrade to IRIX 6.5.18 or later, or install the appropriate patch.
