Security bulletin

Workaround available for Contribute Publishing Server local information
disclosure

   Release date: October 10, 2006

   Vulnerability identifier: APSB06-15

   CVE number: CVE-2006-5199

   Platform: All Platforms

Summary

Due to an issue with logs generated during product installation, a
malicious local user can gain access to the Contribute Publishing
Server administrator password set during the installation process.

Solution

Adobe recommends Contribute Publishing Server users change their
password to prevent potential information disclosure. The steps for
   this process are described below.
    1. Launch the Contribute Publishing Server Administration page.
    2. Log in as usual using your password.
    3. Click on the `Change Password' link on the lower right side of the
       Administration page.
    4. In the `Change Password' dialog, enter your old password, and
enter a new, different password. Click OK.
    5. Click the `Log Out' button on the lower left side of the
       Administration page.

Adobe also recommends that the installation log be deleted. The steps
for this process are described below.
    1. Browse to your Contribute Publishing Server installation
       directory.
    2. Find and open the `UninstallerData' folder (Windows) or the
`Uninstall Macromedia Contribute Publishing Server' folder (Linux
       and Solaris).
    3. Delete the file called installvariables.properties located in the
`UninstallerData' or `Uninstall Macromedia Contribute Publishing
       Server' folder.

Severity rating

Adobe categorizes this as an important issue and recommends
affected users apply the above workarounds to their installation.

Details

Due to an issue with logs generated during product installation, a
malicious local user can gain access to the Contribute Publishing
Server administrator password set during installation. The user would
need access to the local file system to exploit this vulnerability.
