THREAT: A remote attacker may cause a denial of service. CERT VU Number: n/a CVE Number: n/a ========================================================================== DETAILED INFORMATION I. Description =============== Web-based System Manager (WebSM) is a system management application that can be used to manage AIX. More information about WebSM can be found in the "Web-based System Manager Administration Guide". WebSM is enabled by default if "Graphics Software" is selected during install. A remotely exploitable vulnerability exists which allows an attacker to exhaust system memory resulting in a denial of service. This vulnerability can be exploited if WebSM is configured in client-server mode, applet mode or remote client mode. It cannot be exploited if using WebSM in standalone application mode. To determine if WebSM is installed via the sysmgt.websm.rte fileset. To determine if this fileset is installed, execute the following command: # lslpp -L sysmgt.websm.rte The following table shows which versions of sysmgt.websm.rte are vulnerable. APARs IBM provides the following fixes: APAR number for AIX 5200-09: IY95637 (available) APAR number for AIX 5300-05: IY95619 (available approx. 05/23/07) NOTE: Affected customers are urged to upgrade to the latest applicable Technology Level. B. Interim Fix Interim fixes are available. The interim fixes can be downloaded via ftp from: ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/efixes/security/websm_ifix.tar.Z This is a compressed tarball containing this advisory, interim fix packages and cleartext PGP signatures for each package. Verify you have retrieved the fixes intact: +------------------------------------------ The checksums below were generated using the "sum" and "md5sum" commands and are as follows: Filename sum md5 ========================================================================= IY95637_07.070329.epkg.Z 19129 19 ce9e3f58d5a6ecac559074e8daa0677c IY95637_08.070329.epkg.Z 10118 20 74c2032115bacb98136bf4d483ace1d4 IY95637_09.070329.epkg.Z 17030 20 83b98d597d8f9b94717ff377deae0bbf IY95526_03.070329.epkg.Z 37006 20 5df2e8dd0ff7994c2b627478e04026a7 IY95526_04.070329.epkg.Z 25193 20 e3fd40c267cb3d60234cf6f9aae3abbf IY95526_05.070329.epkg.Z 01716 20 a7ca477b73ab6217a8bed1073b2e6dbe See the table below to determine which AIX Technology Level a given interim fix maps to. These sums should match exactly. The PGP signatures in the compressed tarball and on this advisory can also be used to verify the integrity of the various files they correspond to. If the sums or signatures cannot be confirmed, double check the command results and the download site address. If those are OK, contact IBM AIX Security at security-alert@austin.ibm.com and describe the discrepancy. The interim fixes include prerequisite checking. This will ensure the correct mapping between the interim fixes and AIX Technology Levels. The following table shows the prerequisite fileset levels required for the fixes above. The levels show are for both sysmgt.websm.rte and sysmgt.websm.framework. Verify it is both bootable, and readable before proceeding. Customers may contact IBM support if any issues arise with these interim fixes. Interim Installation Instructions: +--------------------------------- These packages use the new Interim Fix Management Solution to install and manage interim fixes. More information can be found at: http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/aix.efixmgmt/home.html To preview an epkg interim fix installation execute the following command: # emgr -e ipkg_name -p # where ipkg_name is the name of the # interim fix package being previewed. To install an epkg interim fix package, execute the following command: # emgr -e ipkg_name -X # where ipkg_name is the name of the # interim fix package being installed. The "X" flag will expand any filesystems if required. C. Workaround If WebSM is not being used, it can be turned off using the wsmserver command as follows: # /usr/websm/bin/wsmserver -disable IV.
