Solution 260951 : A Security Vulnerability in the Solaris IP Filter
                    (ipf(5)) May Lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) Condition

Bug ID : 6681520

Product : Solaris 10 Operating System
          OpenSolaris

Date of Resolved Release : 15-Jul-2009

SA Document Body

A Security Vulnerability in the Solaris IP Filter (ipf(5)) May Lead to a
Denial of Service (DoS) Condition

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Solaris IP Filter (ipfilter(5)) may allow a
local or remote unprivileged user to panic the system. This is a type of
Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:

    * Solaris 10 with patch 125014-02 or later or with patch 120011-14 and
       without patch 141020-01
    * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_45 through snv_110

x86 Platform:

    * Solaris 10 with patch 125015-02 or later or with patch 120012-14 and
       without patch 141021-01
    * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_45 through snv_110

Notes:

1. Solaris 8 and 9 do not bundle ipfilter(5) and are not impacted by this
   issue.

2. Only OpenSolaris installations including the following binary are
   impacted by this issue:

   /usr/kernel/drv/ipf
   /usr/kernel/drv/amd64/ipf

3. OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and
   beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived
   as follows:

   $ uname -v
   snv_101

4. A system is only vulnerable to this issue, if it uses IP Filter
   (ipfilter(5)). To determine if a system is using IP Filter, the following
   command can be run:

   # svcs -xv ipfilter
   svc:/network/ipfilter:default (IP Filter)
   State: disabled since Fri Jun 05 10:26:13 2009
   Reason: Disabled by an administrator.
   See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-05
   See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 5 ipfilter
   See: /var/svc/log/network-ipfilter:default.log
   Impact: This service is not running.

   The above output indicates that ipfilter(5) is not running and the system
   is not vulnerable to this issue.

3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the system may panic with a stack trace
similar to the following:

   ipf:frpr_icmp+0x150()
   ipf:frpr_ipv4hdr+0x174()
   ipf:fr_makefrip+0x5c()
   ipf:fr_check+0x1d8()
   ipf:ipf_hook+0xb4()
   ipf:ipf_hook_out()
   <...>

4. Workaround

To work around this issue, disable ipfilter by using the following command:

   # svcadm disable ipfilter

Note: Disabling the ipfilter(5) will deactivate all packet filtering rules
      configured on the system using ipf(1M).

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:

    * Solaris 10 with patch 141020-01 or later
    * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_111 or later

x86 Platform:

    * Solaris 10 with patch 141021-01 or later
    * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_111 or later
