Microsoft Security Bulletin MS11-089 - Important
Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2590602)

Published Date: December 13, 2011

Version: 1.0

General Information

Executive Summary:

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft
Office. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a
specially crafted Word file. An attacker who successfully exploited this
vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. Users
whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be
less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Microsoft
Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2010, and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that
Microsoft Word parses specially crafted Word files.

Affected Software:

Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 3
Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (32-bit editions)
Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (64-bit editions)
Microsoft Office for Mac
Microsoft Office for Mac 2011

Vulnerability Information:

Word Use After Free Vulnerability - CVE-2011-1983

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft Word
handles specially crafted Word files. An attacker who successfully exploited
this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An
attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or
create new accounts with full user rights.
