Microsoft Security Bulletin MS11-094 - Important

Vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(2639142)

Published Date: December 13, 2011

Version: 1.0

General Information

Executive Summary

This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in
Microsoft Office. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a
user opens a specially crafted PowerPoint file. An attacker who successfully
exploited either of the vulnerabilities could take complete control of an
affected system. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights
on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative
user rights.

This security update is rated Important for Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Service
Pack 2, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The
security update is also rated Important for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats Service Pack 2 and Microsoft
PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Service Pack 2.

Affected Software

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Service Pack 2
Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 (32-bit editions)
Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 (64-bit editions)
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 -
  File Formats Service Pack 2
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Service Pack 2

Vulnerability Information

PowerPoint Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability - CVE-2011-3396
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft
PowerPoint handles the loading of DLL files. An attacker who successfully
exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system.
An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or
create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured
to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who
operate with administrative user rights.

OfficeArt Shape RCE Vulnerability - CVE-2011-3413

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft
PowerPoint handles specially crafted PowerPoint files. An attacker could
exploit the vulnerability by creating a specially crafted PowerPoint file that
could be included as an e-mail attachment, or hosted on a specially crafted or
compromised Web site.
