Security Bulletin

Summary

SSLv3 contains a vulnerability that has been referred to as the Padding Oracle
On Downgraded Legacy Encryption (POODLE) attack. SSLv3 is enabled by default
in IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.

Vulnerability Details

CVE ID: CVE-2014-3566

DESCRIPTION: IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition could allow a
remote attacker to obtain sensitive information, caused by a design error when
using the SSLv3 protocol. A remote user with the ability to conduct a
man-in-the-middle attack could exploit this vulnerability via a POODLE
(Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) attack to decrypt SSL
sessions and access the plaintext of encrypted connections.

Workarounds and Mitigations

When using WebSphere Application Server Community Edition (WASCE) with the
JSSE connectors, the SSL protocol to be used can be configured via
<WASCE_HOME>\var\catalina\server.xml. The following example shows how the
SSLProtocol in an https connector is configured.

<!-- Define a SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8443

This connector uses the JSSE configuration, when using APR, the

connector should be using the OpenSSL style configuration

described in the APR documentation -->

<Connector SSLEnabled="true" address="${ServerHostname}" clientAuth="false"
executor="DefaultThreadPool"
keystoreFile="../security/keystores/geronimo-default"
keystorePass="{Simple}rO0ABXNyABlqYXZheC5jcnlwdG8uU2VhbGVkT2JqZWN0PjY9psO3VHACAARbAA1lbmNvZGVkUGFyYW1zdAACW0JbABBlbmNyeXB0ZWRDb250ZW50cQB+AAFMAAlwYXJhbXNBbGd0ABJMamF2YS9sYW5nL1N0cmluZztMAAdzZWFsQWxncQB+AAJ4cHB1cgACW0Ks8xf4BghU4AIAAHhwAAAAEArVToThqcjvbXFD5C2uUmpwdAADQUVT"
maxThreads="150" name="TomcatWebSSLConnector" port="${HTTPSPort + PortOffset}"
protocol="HTTP/1.1" scheme="https" secure="true"
sslProtocol="TLSv1,TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2"/>

When using WASCE with APR/Native connectors, the SSL protocol to be used can
be configured via <WASCE_HOME>\var\catalina\server.xml. The following example
shows how the SSLProtocol in an https connector is configured.

<Connector port="443" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192"

maxThreads="150"

enableLookups="false" disableUploadTimeout="true"

acceptCount="100" scheme="https" secure="true"

SSLEnabled="true"

SSLProtocol="TLSv1"

SSLCertificateFile="${catalina.base}/conf/localhost.crt"

SSLCertificateKeyFile="${catalina.base}/conf/localhost.key" />
