Security AdvisorySecurity Advisory

Original Publication Date: 04/29/2015

Description

The BIG-IP Phone Home and ASM Call Home automatic signature update
functionality is susceptible to Man-in-the-Middle type attacks due to improper
validation of server SSL certificates. (CVE-2014-9326)

Impact

In the scenario where DNS records for callhome.f5.com are compromised, an
attacker may be able to deliver a malicious payload to the BIG-IP system.

Status

list a Severity value.

Recommended Action

If the previous table lists a version in the Versions known to be not
vulnerable column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to the
listed version. If the listed version is older than the version you are
currently running, or if the table does not list any version in the column,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

F5 responds to vulnerabilities in accordance with the Severity values
published in the previous table. The Severity values and other security
vulnerability parameters are defined in SOL4602: Overview of the F5 security
vulnerability response policy.

To mitigate this vulnerability, you can disable the automatic call home
functionality. To do so, perform one of the following procedures:

Disable the PhoneHome functionality for affected BIG-IP versions

Impact of action: The system will not perform the automatic update (phone
home) check features; you should manually perform these checks.

1. Disable manual updates by following the instructions in SOL15000: Using the
   Automatic Update Check feature.

2. Manually update individual BIG-IP components by following the instructions in
   the following articles:

Major and minor releases - SOL167: Downloading software and firmware from F5
   and SOL13123: Managing BIG-IP product hotfixes (11.x)

Hotfix releases - SOL167: Downloading software and firmware from F5 and
   SOL13123: Managing BIG-IP product hotfixes (11.x)

End-User Diagnostics - SOL167: Downloading software and firmware from F5 and
   SOL13123: Managing BIG-IP product hotfixes (11.x)

EPSEC/OPSWAT - SOL10942: Installing OPSWAT hotfixes on BIG-IP APM systems

Geolocation - SOL11176: Downloading and installing updates to the IP
   geolocation database

Disable the CallHome automatic attack signature update functionality on the
BIG-IP ASM system

Impact of action: The BIG-IP signature database may be out of date if it is
not regularly, manually updated.

For instructions on how to disable automatic signature updates, and implement
a manual update regime, refer to SOL8217: Updating the BIG-IP ASM attack
signatures.

Disable the automatic signature update functionality on the BIG-IP PEM system

1. Log in to the BIG-IP Configuration utility as the admin user.

2. On the Main tab, navigate to Policy Enforcement > Signatures.

3. To disable the Automatic Updates setting, clear the Enabled box.

4. To save your settings, click Update.
