(CVE-2016-7426) Impact When the ntpd process is configured with rate limiting for all associations, the limits are also applied to responses received from its configured sources. An attacker who knows the sources (for example, from an IPv4 refid in a server response), and knows the system is configured in this way, can periodically send packets with spoofed source addresses to keep the rate limiting activated and prevent the ntpd process from accepting valid responses from its sources, resulting in a denial of service (DoS). This vulnerability can be exposed when ntpd configurations use the limited directive. The BIG-IP system's default ntpd configuration does not specify the limited directive. The limited directive cannot be added to the configuration using the Configuration utility, but can be added using the TMOS Shell (tmsh). The limited directive is most commonly used as part of the default restriction with other directives such as the noquery directive. For example, restrict default limited noquery nomodify. Security Advisory Status F5 Product Development has assigned ID 630969 (BIG-IP) and INSTALLER-2824 (Traffix SDC) to this vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H51444934 on the Diagnostics > Identified > Low screen. If the table lists only an older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists. Mitigation None. To avoid vulnerability exposure, F5 recommends removing the limited directive from ntpd restriction statements. Impact of action: Various F5 product features rely on proper date and time configuration; ensure that any modifications to the ntpd configuration are compatible with your environment.
