K81211720: Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2017-6214

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: Apr 14, 2017
Updated Date: Dec 22, 2017

Security Advisory Description

The tcp_splice_read function in net/ipv4/tcp.c in the Linux kernel before
4.9.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and
soft lockup) via vectors involving a TCP packet with the URG flag. (
CVE-2017-6214)

Impact

An attacker, using a specially crafted TCP packet, can force the kernel to
enter an infinite loop condition.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 653879 and 653880 (BIG-IP), ID 654212
(BIG-IQ), ID 654205 (Enterprise Manager), ID 655792 (F5 iWorkflow), and
INSTALLER-2978, INSTALLER-2979, INSTALLER-2980, and INSTALLER-2981 (Traffix
SDC) to this vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic
H81211720 on the Diagnostics > Identified > High screen.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

To determine the necessary upgrade path for your BIG-IQ system, you should
understand the BIG-IQ product offering name changes. For more information,
refer to K21232150: Considerations for upgrading BIG-IQ or F5 iWorkflow systems
.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, you should permit management access to F5
products only over a secure network and restrict command line access for
affected systems to only trusted users. For more information, refer to K13309:
Restricting access to the Configuration utility by source IP address
(11.x-13.x) and K13092: Overview of securing access to the BIG-IP system.
