Security Advisory Description

Responses to SOCKS proxy requests made through the BIG-IP system may cause a
disruption of service provided by the Traffic Management Microkernel (TMM). The
data plane is impacted and exposed only when a SOCKS proxy profile is attached
to a virtual server. The control plane is not impacted by this vulnerability. (
CVE-2017-6148)

Impact

An attacker may be able to perform a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on a BIG-IP
system by causing the TMM process to restart.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 670822 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.

To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this
vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your
release is known to be vulnerable, the components or features that are affected
by the vulnerability, and for information about releases or hotfixes that
address the vulnerability, refer to the following table.

^1The CVSSv3 score link takes you to a resource outside of AskF5, and it is
possible that the document may be removed without our knowledge.

^2 The specified products contain the affected code. However, F5 identifies the
vulnerability status as Not vulnerable because the attacker cannot exploit the
code in default, standard, or recommended configurations.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Only virtual servers with a SOCKS profile configured are vulnerable. To
determine if your BIG-IP system has a virtual server configuration using the
SOCKS profile, perform the following procedure:

Determining the SOCKS profiles configured on the system

Impact of action: Performing the following procedure should not have a negative
impact on your system.

 1. Log in to the TMOS Shell (tmsh) by typing the following command:

    tmsh

 2. List the SOCKS profiles configured on your BIG-IP system by typing the
    following command:

    list ltm profile socks

 3. Note the names of the configured SOCKS profiles. You will use the profile
names to determine which virtual server is enabled with the SOCKS profile
    in the next procedure.

Determining the virtual servers that are enabled with a SOCKS profile

Impact of action: Performing the following procedure should not have a negative
impact on your system.

 1. Log in to tmsh by typing the following command:

    tmsh

 2. Using the profile names obtained from the previous procedure, determine the
virtual servers that have enabled a SOCKS profile by using the following
    command syntax:

    list ltm virtual all profiles | grep -B 2 <profile name>

For example, you would type the following command to determine which
virtual server is using the My_profile profile:

list ltm virtual all profiles | grep -B 2 My_HTTP_explicit_profile

 3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining profile names obtained from previous
    procedure.
