Security Advisory Description

Malformed TCP packets sent to a self IP address or a FastL4 virtual server may
cause an interruption of service. The control plane is not exposed to this
issue. This issue impacts the data plane virtual servers and self IPs. (


This vulnerability allows remote disruption of service.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable
version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.


Mitigation for self IP addresses

To mitigate this issue for self IP addresses, you can use packet filters to
restrict access to trusted users. For information, refer to the following

Mitigation for FastL4 virtual servers

For BIG-IP Virtual Edition (VE) systems that have been configured with TSO
disabled, you can mitigate this vulnerability by enabling TSO. You can enable
TSO by setting the value of the tm.tcpsegmentationoffload BigDB key to enable,
and restarting the Traffic Management Microkernel (TMM). To do so, perform the
following procedure:

Note: TSO is enabled by default. This mitigation is only applicable if you
have manually disabled TSO on BIG-IP VE.

Impact of action: Since TSO enabled is the default value for BIG-IP systems,
performing the following procedure should not have a negative impact on your
system. However, if you have disabled TSO in your environment, the impact of
the suggested mitigation will depend on the specific environment. F5
recommends testing any such changes during a maintenance window with
consideration to the possible impact on your specific environment.
Additionally, restarting TMM temporarily interrupts traffic processing.

 1. Log in to the TMOS shell (tmsh) by typing the following command:

    modify sys db tm.tcpsegmentationoffload value enable

 3. Restart TMM by typing the following command

    restart /sys service tmm
