(CVE-1999-0517) Note: This vulnerability does not affect SNMPv3. Impact When configured to allow remote SNMP access, attackers may be able to access SNMPv2 using a guessed community string, allowing SNMP access without authorization. Security Advisory Status F5 Product Development has assigned ID 746117 (BIG-IP), and CPF-25016, CPF-25017 (Traffix) to this vulnerability. To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your release is known to be vulnerable, the components or features that are affected by the vulnerability, and for information about releases or hotfixes that address the vulnerability, refer to the following table. Security Advisory Recommended Actions If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists. Mitigation If you are not using SNMP, you should prevent SNMP access from all hosts, including localhost, as described in K13535: Restricting SNMP access to the BIG-IP system. If you are using SNMPv2, you can install agent access rules with a community string other than public and restrict SNMP access from remote addresses. To do so, perform the following procedure: Impact of workaround: Performing the following procedure should not have a negative impact on your system. 1. Log in to the BIG-IP Configuration utility. 2. Click System. 3. Navigate to the SNMP > Agent > Access (v1, v2c). 4. Select the public:default check box. 5. Click Delete. 6. Confirm by clicking Delete again. 7. Click Create. 8. Enter a new community string of your choice. 9. Select a new source of default. 10. Click Finished. Note: SNMP clients will need to use the new community string to access SNMP data on the BIG-IP host.
