K35209601:BIG-IP snmpd vulnerability CVE-2019-6606

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 22 Mar, 2019

Security Advisory Description

When processing certain SNMP requests with a request-id of 0, the snmpd process
may leak a small amount of memory. (CVE-2019-6606)

Impact

When a remote attacker exploits this vulnerability, the BIG-IP system may
consume excessive amounts of memory, which can result in a failover event.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 658557 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.

To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this
vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, you can restart the snmpd process when memory
consumption is high. To do so, perform the following procedure:

Impact of action: SNMP functionality is disrupted while the snmpd process
restarts.

 1. Log in to the TMOS Shell (tmsh) by typing the following command:

    tmsh

 2. Restart the snmpd process by typing the following command:

    restart /sys service snmpd

 3. Verify that the service is running by typing the following command:

    show /sys service snmpd

Output appears similar to the following example:

snmpd run (pid 22143) 8 seconds, 1 start
