An announcement has been made of a new, critical security bug in Windows and Samba, called Badlock.  The details of the bug and its impact, which are believed to be serious, will be announced on April 12, 2016, Microsoft’s next patch Tuesday.

Badlock was discovered by a member of the Samba Core Team, Stefan Metzmacher. Stefan reported the bug to Microsoft and has been working with them on a fix.

On April 12, patches should be available from Microsoft and major UNIX distributions, however for now you should be blocking SMB traffic, both in and out, at your network border. The Samba team expects that exploits will follow once the patches are released, so apply patches as soon as they are available.
