-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- =========================================================================== AUSCERT External Security Bulletin Redistribution ESB-2001.100 -- RHSA-2001:024-03 Updated joe packages are available for Red Hat Linux 5.2, 6.x and 7 6 March 2001 =========================================================================== AusCERT Security Bulletin Summary --------------------------------- Product: joe Vendor: Red Hat Operating System: Red Hat Linux 5.2 Red Hat Linux 6.x Red Hat Linux 7 Impact: Increased Privileges - --------------------------BEGIN INCLUDED TEXT-------------------- - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Updated joe packages are available for Red Hat Linux 5.2, 6.x and 7. Advisory ID: RHSA-2001:024-03 Issue date: 2001-02-28 Updated on: 2001-03-02 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: joe joerc cwd DEADJOE symlink vulnerability Cross references: Obsoletes: RHSA-2000:110 - --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Topic: Updated joe packages are available for Red Hat Linux 5.2, 6.x and 7. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Linux 5.2 - alpha, i386, sparc Red Hat Linux 6.2 - alpha, i386, sparc Red Hat Linux 7.0 - alpha, i386 3. Problem description: When starting, joe looks for a configuration file in the current working directory, the user's home directory, and /etc/joe. A malicious user could create a .joerc file in a world writable directory such as /tmp and make users running joe inside that directory using a .joerc file that is customized to execute commands with their own userids. The current working directory has been removed from the list of possible directories with the .joerc configuration file. 4. Solution: To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh <filenames> where <filenames> is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directly *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. 5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info): 30031 - joe tries to use ./.joerc 6.
