Updates are available. Description A vulnerability in Cisco Nexus 9000 Series software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by copying large files to the device file system. Processing the large files could cause the device to stop responding, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates. Warning Indicators At the time this alert was first published, Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Software Release 11.1(1c) was vulnerable. Later releases may also be affected. IntelliShield Analysis To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker must have authentication credentials to log in to the device and privileges that allow copying large files to the file system. These restrictions greatly reduce the potential for exploitation. Vendor Announcements Cisco has released bug ID CSCuu77225 for registered users, which contains additional details and an up-to-date list of affected product versions. Impact An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a targeted device to consume available memory resources, resulting in a DoS condition. Technical Information The vulnerability is due to improper handling of large files stored in the /tmp directory. An authenticated, remote attacker with sufficient privileges could exploit the vulnerability by copying files into the /tmp directory. The processing of the files could cause the device to consume available memory resources, preventing system access to legitimate users, resulting in a DoS condition. Safeguards Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates. Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems. Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems. Patches/Software Cisco customers with active contracts can obtain updates through the Software Center at the following link: Cisco.
