K60104355: Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2017-5970

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: Apr 19, 2017
Updated Date: Nov 02, 2018

Security Advisory Description

The ipv4_pktinfo_prepare function in net/ipv4/ip_sockglue.c in the Linux kernel
through 4.9.9 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) via
(1) an application that makes crafted system calls or possibly (2) IPv4 traffic
with invalid IP options. (CVE-2017-5970)

Impact

This vulnerability may allow a remote user to cause a denial of service (DoS)
for the BIG-IP control plane.

Note: Only the BIG-IP control plane is vulnerable; the data plane is not
affected by this vulnerability.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 651741 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.
Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H60104355 on the Diagnostics >
Identified > High page.

To determine if your release is known to be vulnerable, the components or
features that are affected by the vulnerability, and for information about
releases or hotfixes that address the vulnerability, refer to the following

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, you should permit management access to F5
products only over a secure network and restrict command line access for
affected systems to trusted users. For more information, refer to K13309:
Restricting access to the Configuration utility by source IP address (11.x -
14.x) and K13092: Overview of securing access to the BIG-IP system.

Impact of action: Performing the suggested mitigation should not have a
negative impact on your system.
